Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1878 $3 MS62 PCGS. Minted in a large quantity of more than 82,000 pieces to serve as reserves for the anticipated exchange of paper money for gold, the mere authorization by law for such an exchange was enough to satisfy the public, which preferred to use the paper currency. The 1878 three dollar gold pieces languished in treasury vaults. This MS62 example is brightly lustrous with partially reflective fields and attractive, medium-gold color. Light abrasions account for the grade. A sharp strike weakens at the lower hair curls and at the bowknot.
