Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1878 $3 MS63 NGC. The 1878 three dollar gold piece has the second highest mintage of the series, as it was coined in anticipation of the public being allowed once again to exchange paper money for gold beginning on New Year's Day, 1879. The coins remained in bags, however, as most people decided that just knowing that they could exchange their bills was enough. This lustrous example retains its velvety surfaces and has tremendous eye appeal, with only a handful of abrasions, most obviously to the right of the obverse headdress.
