Liberty Double Eagles
1898 $20 MS63 NGC. With a lower mintage than the Philadelphia issues of the previous few years, the 1898 double eagle can be difficult to find in pleasing condition. According to the Garrett and Guth's Encyclopedia, the 1898 is "seldom seen above MS-62." This example is well-struck, with sharp details, and the lustrous surfaces bear a hint of orange toning that indicates originality. Scattered marks commensurate with the grade and a splash of darker reverse toning are noted. NGC has graded only 23 finer including 1 in 63+ (9/17).
