Patterns
1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-326A, Pollock-394, High R.6, PR65 NGC. During the Civil War, coins were hoarded by both North and South, and this pattern was part of an effort to replenish small change. This problem was eventually solved by fractional currency. The simple design features a shield, arrows, and wreath, not too different from the eventually released two cent piece and Shield nickel. The legends define the issue as postage currency, redeemable in U.S. notes. These dies were stuck in various alloys. Judd-326A was struck with a plain edge in a billon (copper-silver) alloy. Several compositions of copper and silver were tried on this pattern and not all have been metallurgically tested. This piece is deeply toned in shades of blue, green, and gray with brightly reflective fields that display die striations. Two prominent die cracks are easily seen on the left side of the obverse.
