Patterns
1896 5C Five Cents, Judd-1772, Pollock-1989, High R.6, PR64 PCGS. This 1896 pattern design features a large shield in the center of the obverse with crossed poles behind and a large ribbon across the center of the shield. The reverse has a large numeral 5 with CENTS in small letters below, surrounded by a curved olive sprig. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. Pollock lists four different alloys for this aluminum striking. However, the composition of this piece is unlisted. It has been metallurgically tested by PCGS and the percentage of aluminum is significantly lower than the four compositions listed in Pollock. The insert lists this piece as: 88% aluminum, 2.7% nickel, 2.5% copper, and 2.2% something else (apparently they ran out of room on the insert). The surfaces are bright as would be expected from an aluminum striking with nicely reflective fields and no oxidation.
