1877-S "Box Dollar," Uncertified. An "opium dollar," or "box dollar," created by hollowing out one coin and planing off another to make two hinged halves that fit together tightly. Pressing on the reverse dentils at about 12 o'clock and then pressing or pulling the lid downward opens the piece. The inside shows shimmering swirls created by the hollowing machine, while the exterior is slate-gray with mild wear. A few peripheral pinscratches are seen on the reverse. The internal mica is missing.
