Maudslay Sons & Field was the successor to Henry Maudslay & Co, founded in 1798. From 1816 the company began work for the Royal Mint in 1816, mostly in supplying and repairing machinery and this piece is a demonstration of their capabilities. They later specialized in marine steam engines and, famously, in 1852, it was one of their steam-powered mills that was used for the 1852 re-cutting of the Koh-i-Noor diamond.
