William III. 1694-1702. AR shilling. 6.32 gm. 25 mm. First bust. 1696. His laureate first draped bust right; GVLIELMVS Ñ III DEI GRA around / Crowned arms cruciform; date 1696 at top; MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX around. S. 3497. ESC 1104. Good Extremely Fine; slight haymarking; otherwise a choice coin with red hints in the peripheral toning over underlying luster.

The crown over the Scottish arms on the reverse has a clear reversed "D" underneath; it suggests that the flan may have been in place but the prior piece had not been removed and this piece was lightly and unevenly struck so that the obverse "D" was imprinted (and perhaps a bit more) but then things were corrected and the only evidence of the error is this "D". Additionally, this piece is a bit heavier than the norm, similar to the proof issue ESC 1107. While this coin does not have the usual characteristics of a proof, it does represent an interesting and unusual departure from the normal issue.
