Sterling silver sovereign / half sovereign case. Early 20th Century. 43.3 gm. 30 x 51 mm. Oblong silver shell-like holder, with loop; inside constructed to hold several sovereigns and half sovereigns; the base inside is on a spring-loaded internal base; finely engraved covers with an ornate HB monogram. Hallmarks inside the top cover: HCF | anchor | lion standing left | i (1904); SML above; Samuel M Levi. Birmingham Assay Office. HCF was Henry Charles Freeman, a silversmith at Hatton Garden, London but this piece has a Birmingham hallmark. Near Extremely Fine; attractive light toning. (No wonder 19th century sovereigns usually show up worn but often with luster in the legends.)
