CILICIA. Uncertain. Late 5th to early 4th century BC. Stater (Silver, 22 mm, 10.59 g, 7 h). Griffin seated left. Rev. Man-headed bull, horned and with curved wings, advancing left. Cf. Roma 14 (2017), 399 (as 'Samaria?') and Savoca, 15 October 2017, 79 ('Samaria'). Extremely rare, apparently the third example known. Struck from worn dies with some breaks, otherwise, about very fine.
This enigmatic type was attributed to 'Samaria (?)' in the Roma 14 catalogue, an attribution followed by Savoca in their October 2017 sale. The style, size and fabric of the coin, however, clearly point toward a Cilician origin.
