Theodosius II, 402-450. Solidus (Gold, 20 mm, 3.86 g, 6 h), Constantinopolis, 430-440. D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Theodosius II facing, wearing pearl diadem and holding a spear with his right hand and a shield, decorated with a cavalryman riding over a fallen enemy, over left shoulder. Rev. VOT XXX MVLT XXXX / CONOB Constantinopolis seated left, resting her left foot on prow, holding globus cruciger in her right hand and a scepter with her left; shield at her side; in field to right, star. Depeyrot 81/1. RIC 257. Considerable clipping and with a graffito on the obverse and minor scratches on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.


This example bears no officina number and is probably to be placed at the beginning of the series in the early 430's.
