Lycaonia, Ilystra. Philip I. A.D. 244-249. AE 29 (29.45 mm, 12.60 g, 7 h). AY K M IOY Φ[Ι]ΛI - ΠΠOC CЄB, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip I left, seen from behind / ΙΛΙCΤΡЄ-ωΝ ΚΟΙΝ ΛΥΚΑΙΟΝΙΑ-C, Zeus seated left holding patera and scepter, at his feet to left, eagle. Von Aulock, Lykaioniens 102-5 (same dies); SNG BN 2309-10 (same dies); BMC 103 (same obv. die). rough VF, toned copper highlights with darker brown toning in fields. RRRare!.

In 1976 Von Aulock knew of just five specimens of this very rare coin: 1. MMAG 41 (1970), 541; 2. SNG BN 2309 = Imhoof-Blumer, Monnaies Grecques p. 347, 119; 3. SNG BN 2310 = Waddington 4776 = RN (1883), p. 52, 3; 4. Staatliche Museum, Berlin; 5. BMC 103. All share the same dies except the specimen in the collection of the British Museum which was struck from a reverse die different from the others. It seems no other specimens have appeared at public auction since at least the early 2000s, including the large Roman provincial collections of J.S. Wagner, "D. Alighieri," P. Villemur, "Tony Hardy," or Marcel Burstein, nor were examples published in either the Righetti or Lindgren collections.
