Memorial Plaque, 1914-1918 (Thomas Hugh Kirk) polished, very fine. Private Thomas Hugh Kirk, originally from Lowestoft, England, had moved to New Zealand and had worked part of the staff of Mount Eden School, Auckland. He served in the Great War as a Private in the New Zealand Medical Corps, based at No. 1 Stationary Hospital at Port Said. He and a number of other members of the New Zealand Medical Corps were being transported from Port Said to Lemnos when their ship, the Marquette, was attacked on 23 October 1915 by a German U-boat 36 miles south of Salonika Bay. The ship sank within 15 minutes, with 29 crew and 182 troops lost, including Private T. H. Kirk. His name is commemorated on the Mikra Memorial, near Thessaloniki, Greece.
