Draped bust of Cleopatra right, wearing stephane; all within pelleted border. Rev. ЄTOYC KA TOY KAI C ΘЄAC NЄѠTЄPAC. Bare head of Mark Antony right; all within pelleted border. RPC 4771. Rouvier 440 (Berytus). SNG München 1006. SNG Cop. 382. AE. g. 10.63 RR. A remarkable example of this very rare and fascinating issue. Superb earthen olive-green patina. Minor areas of flatness, otherwise good VF.

The city of Chalcis in Syria was part of the Eastern territories illegitimately bestowed by Mark Antony to his wife Cleopatra, mother to their children Helios and Selene. The propaganda machine of Octavian successfully used these grants against Mark Antony to win over the public opinion in Rome.
