Antoninus Pius (138-161). AE Dupondius, 159-160 AD. Obv. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP TR P XXIII. Radiate head right. Rev. COS IIII SC. The cult-statue of the Genius of the Senate, represented as a togate figure standing facing on cippus, holding a branch and a wand; the statue is contained in a shrine (Sacellum Genii Senatus) with onorate arch. RIC - (cf. 1014: TR P XXII). C - (cf. 334: same)(Fr. 5). AE. g. 13.41 mm. 26.50 RR. An outstanding example of this fascinating and intriguing architectural type. Very rare, not listed in RIC and apparently unpublished. Superb marbled green and dark grey patina. EF.

We do not know where the shrine here represented was located, but it may have been in the Senate House, the Curia Julia, commenced by Julius Caesar just before his assassination in 44 BC and restored by Domitian in 94 AD. The building fell victim to fire in the Forum in 283 AD. (See P. Hill, The Monuments of Ancient Rome as coins Types, pp. 39 and 44).
