Taiwan. Chang Wen "Old Man" Dollar ND (1838-50) UNC Details (Reverse Scratched, Chopmarked) NGC, KM-C25.3, L&M-316, Kann-1. Issued by the Taiwan Dao to fund military action against the Ching court. This example has a minor area of soft-strike on the obverse at 5 o'clock, but otherwise the strike is quite bold. Two very small chopmarks are noted on the obverse, as well as the two assayer's marks below the cauldron on the reverse. The surfaces are free of wear and considerable mint luster remains on both the obverse and reverse. Even with a small scratch at the top of the cauldron, this piece is, by far, the finest example we have ever seen of the type.
