China
Republic Yuan Shih-kai gold 10 Dollars Year 8 (1919) MS63 NGC, Tientsin mint, KM-Y330. L&M-1030, Kann-1531. Struck in 1919 during the brief revival of a plan to reintroduce gold coinage. The plan never fully materialized however, with essentially all of the small allotment of 10 and 20 dollar pieces struck quickly vanishing from circulation. Even so, it seems most were not carefully kept, and survivors often show surface scratches or evidence of harsh cleaning. This example has avoided such perils however, retaining vibrant gleam in the fields, sharp design elements and surfaces that hold little handling. Light toning flecks are scattered over the obverse, but none dominate the appearance. This is our first offering of any kind in over 8 years and it ranks as the second finest we've ever presented; as such, this coin should certainly be the beneficiary of significant pent-up enthusiasm.
