CELTIC, Asia. Late 4th or early 3rd century BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 16.73 g, 9 h), an early imitation of a tetradrachm of Alexander III from Damascus. Head of Herakles in lion skin headdress to right. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΙΑΝΡΟ / ΣΙΛΕΩ (second word retrograde) Zeus seated on throne to left; below, ΔΑ; in field to left, torch. Unpublished?. Very rare. A bold piece, well-struck. Good very fine.

From the collection of W.F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired from Münzen und Medaillen, Basel and ex Kricheldorf auction, October 1955.

This is a remarkably fine contemporary copy: while the obverse betrays its non-Greek die engraver, the reverse, aside from the inscription, very carefully done.
