PTOLEMAIC KINGS OF EGYPT. Ptolemy I Soter, as satrap, 323-305 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 15.70 g, 1 h), struck in the name of Alexander III "the Great", Ptolemaic standard, Alexandria, 311/0-305 . Diademed head of the deified Alexander III, with horn of Zeus Ammon above his ear, wearing an elephant skin headdress and an aegis around his neck. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Athena Alkidemos advancing to right, brandishing spear with her right hand and holding a shield with her left; in the field to right, Corinthian helmet to right over monogram of KΡ above eagle standing right on thunderbolt. Svoronos 164. Zervos Issue 29. Toned and attractive. Obverse lightly struck and with traces of overstriking, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of W. F. Stoecklin, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired from Hess in Luzern prior to 1975.

Faint traces of a profile of Alexander/Herakles can clearly be seen underneath the cheek of Alexander on the obverse of this coin. It is probably the remains of another coin of this type, though it could be a normal tetradrachm of Alexander type, albeit cut down to the Ptolemaic weight standard .
