Ex Randy Haviland Collection, Gemini X, 13 January 2013, lot 327;
Ex De Nicola FPL 3, September 1968, lot 300;
Banti Mvssidia 13/11 (this coin).

The imperfection across the face of Sol is as-struck and reflects an underlying weight adjustment flan gouge, a practice termed al-marco. This is a relatively late example of the al-marco weight adjustment system, which requires that a batch of coin blanks be deliberately made from a slight excess of silver, and the weight of the batch then be adjusted down by selecting blanks at random – not by weighing them – from the batch, and gouging a small piece from the selected blanks until the batch weight is correct. Although not intuitively obvious, this technique causes a reduced weight variation between coins, and requires much less work than individually adjusting the weight of each flan (al-peso). Clive Stannard has published extensively on this technique, see http://stannard.info/
