Bruttium, Kaulonia AR Drachm. Circa 450-445 BC. Apollo, naked but for fillet hanging from left arm, advancing right, holding branch in uplifted right hand; stag on tablet in right field, looking backwards, KAV to left / Stag standing right; kantharos above, Φ below, KAVΛONI-[ATAN] around. Noe, Caulonia 216; HN Italy 2056. 2.20g, 16mm, 3h.
Very Fine. Struck on a tight, oval-shaped flan with some flat strike and a minor die break to rev. over Φ. Old cabinet tone.
Noe notes that as this type evolves, in the second stage, a fillet [is added] hanging from [the] left arm of Apollo" and that a die-break makes the letter Φ below the stag look curiously like a ewer. "
