Islands off Sicily, Gaulos Æ18. Roman rule, circa 250-200 BC. Bust of Astarte right, wearing stephane(?), within large crescent; V below chin / ΓΑΥΛΙΤΩΝ, warrior advancing right, brandishing shield and holding spear; star to right. Calciati III, 1; SNG Copenhagen (Africa) 453. 4.58g, 18mm, 12h.

Very Fine - Good Very Fine. Very Rare.

Not differentiated in SNG Copenhagen though both are present in the collection (cf. no.'s 453 & 454), two obverse types are extant for this reverse from Gaulos: one such as the present piece with a head that appears unadorned or possibly wearing a diadem, said to be Astarte, and one helmeted, likely Athena or Roma.
