1776 $1 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter, EG FECIT -- Obverse Scratched, Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. Newman 3-D, W-8460, R.4. A circular die crack connects seven rings from 12 o'clock to 5 o'clock on this nicely detailed Continental dollar. The light gray centers of this example gradually change to deeper gray near the borders. The obverse is scratched between the inner and outer rings from 12:30 to 4:30. After much speculation throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Eric P. Newman was able to attribute the initials EG as Elisha Gallaudet (1730-1805), a New York silversmith and engraver.
