Percy Hague Jowett, CBE (1882-1955), painter, watercolourist, teacher and liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths; b Halifax, studied at Leeds and the Royal College of Art, under Gerald Moira. Winning the Prix de Rome, he travelled to Italy. Back in England he taught at Beckenham School of Art, returning there after serving in the Royal Garrison Artillery in France and Flanders, 1916-18. He was principal of Chelsea School of Art and then the Central School of Arts and Crafts, 1930-5. In 1935 he succeeded William Rothenstein as principal of the Royal College of Art, which was evacuated to Ambleside for the duration of the Second World War. Jowett was a member of the War Advisory Committee and retired from the RCA in 1948. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Watercolour Society, New English Art Club, Redfern Gallery and the Fine Art Society and in the 1920s had a series of solo shows at the St George's Gallery. In 1912 he married Enid Ledward (1889-1971), sister of the sculptor Gilbert Ledward. He lived in Chelsea, London
