Warren Stormes Hale (1791-1872), founder of the City of London School in Queen Victoria street; orphaned at a young age, he became an apprenticed chandler in 1804 and was twice Master of the Tallow Chandlers' Company, in 1849 and 1851. He was appointed an alderman in 1856, sheriff in 1858 and served as Lord Mayor of London, 1864-5; he lived in West Heath, Hampstead
