Ireland, George II (1727-60), Halfpenny, 1747, v over u in georgivs, laureate head left, rev. maid of erin (S.6607), a previously unrecorded variety, near fine, extremely rare
In 1747, Irish issues of George II updated the Latin legends used to represent the King's name. Previously, George II was transcribed as georgius with a U as opposed to the more traditional and distinctive Roman V - georgivs. However, as had been the case with the contemporary English 'Lima' currency, the customary form was readopted and one must only assume that this die was one of the last produced in the erroneous style to account for the subsequent 'correction'. Undoubtedly an intriguing addition to the corpus of early Irish milled coinage.

Estimate: £60.00-£80.00
