GREAT BRITAIN: Victoria, 1837-1901, AR medal, Queen's South Africa Medal issued 1899-1902, with new ribbon and long length of original ribbon, awarded to 1747 PTE J. WATERS. RL: IRISH FUS:, EF. The Queen's South Africa Medal is a British campaign medal which was awarded to British and Colonial military personnel, civilians employed in official capacity and war correspondents who served in the Second Boer War in South Africa. Altogether twenty-six clasps were awarded to recipients of the Queen's South Africa Medal, to indicate particular actions and campaigns of the Second Boer War. During the Second Boer War, the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the Grenadier Guards were deployed to South Africa where they took part in a number of battles including the Battle of Modder River and the Battle of Belmont, as well as a number of smaller actions. Waters served in the 2nd Battalion of The Royal Irish Fusiliers (Princess Victoria's).
