GOVERNORS OF SIND: al-Hakam b. 'Awana, ca. 730-734, AR damma (0.35g), NM, ND, A-P1493, 2nd half of the kalima // 3 line legend 'amara bihi / al-hakam bin / 'awana, VF, RRR, ex M.H. Mirza Collection. Al-Hakam b. 'Awana is recorded by al-Baladhuri as governor of Sind at the end of the Umayyad period, apparently appointed by the eastern governor Khalid b. 'Abd Allah al-Qasri to fight in Sind for the Umayyads in 112, though his coins may have been produced for several years thereafter. This piece differs from the examples sold in Stephen Album Auction 28, Lot 2122 (for $1400) and in Morton & Eden Auction 89, Lot 27 (for the equivalent of $1193) as in contains the 2nd rather than the 1st half of the kalima, the reverse legend is the same but slightly differently arranged, and both the style & weight suggest a dfferent mint.
