Syria, Seleucis and Pieria. Antiochia ad Orontem. Caracalla. A.D. 198-217. AR tetradrachm (25 mm, 12.13 g, 6 h). Cos. IV (A.D. 213-217), but struck ca. A.D. 215-217. B AVT K M A AN[T]ΩNЄINOC CЄB (sic), laureate head of Caracalla right / ΔHMAPX ЄΞ VΠATO TO Δ, eagle standing facing on blub, wings displayed, head right, holding wreath in beak; between legs, star. McAlee 683A (same obv. die); Prieur -. Extremely rare - only one specimens recorded by McAlee. Nearly very fine.

McAlee notes that ""the initial B duplicates the B at the end of the legend"" (p. 270, n. 136). Our coin is struck from the same obverse die as the McAlee specimen. While it is not clear, what McAlee sees as the initial letter B does somewhat resemble a B on our coin, too, but the spacing between it and the following letter A as well as the fact that it appears on both his coin and ours indicates that it is probably not a letter at all but rather a minor flaw caused by rust on the die instead. If so, then the legend, lacking the initial B, would be in correct form.

Estimate: $100
