Obv: SVPAKO[SION] Head of Arethusa l. with hair up in sphendone, which is ornamented with star. Rx: Herakles kneeling r. strangling the Nemean lion. Ex Sambon-Canessa, Hotel Drouot, 27-30 June 1927, lot 884.This is the most desired issue of gold struck in Syracuse. The head of Arethusa is very similar to the work of Kimon. Some of the dies are signed by him. With some die breaks on the reverse as usual, but in this case they do not seriously affect the design. Arethusa's hair is flatly struck at highest points. This is an excellent example of this extremely popular and beautiful issue. EF
