Hadrian. 40-as; Hadrian; 117-138 AD, Rome, c. 125-8 AD, As, 10.02g. BMC-1345 note, RIC-674, C-449 (6 Fr.). Obv: [HA]DRIANVS - AVGVS[TVS] Bust laureate r., fold of cloak on front shoulder. Rx: COS [III] above, S C in exergue, Galley traveling l., with seven rowers (two of them, their heads only shown, are in a second row) and ten oars, in stern emperor or helmsman in arched cabin, at prow slanting mast with furled sail at top, on side of prow small mushroom-shaped object (anchor?). Cf. BMC, p. clxvii: "The galleys, like the types of Neptune, look to Hadrian's return (to Rome) by sea".Some original encrustation. Flawless surfaces. Dark green patination. EF
