Great Britain, The Peace of Breda, ND (1667) Medal, EF, Great Britain, Charles II, 1660-1685. The Peace of Breda on July 31, 1667 between the Netherlands and Great Britain. Unsigned, by J. Roettiers. Gold, 126g, 56.5mm. Obv: Bust r. with laurel wreath // FAVENTE DEO ("With God's help") Britannia is sitting to l. with spear and shield on rock, looking at their war fleet on the sea. Rev: Inscribed: * + * CAROLVS * SECVNDVS * PACIS * ET * IMPERII * RESTITVTOR * AVGVSTVS. Bucket 241; Hawkins, p. 535, no. 186; Pax in Nummis 270; v. Loon II, cf. P. 544 (Histoire metallique II, cf 522). Some minor ticks and marks. Edge and die flaw are as made and as illustrated by Eimer. Large early English gold medals are very rare and hardly ever available in the open market. Collectors of high denomination English gold coins will note that there are no 5 Guineas of 1667. Only a mere handful of the present medals may exist.See the comment in Hawkins, p. 536: "These medals by John Roettier have the great fault of being without date. [...] They commemorate the unrealized efforts made by England during the year [...] these medals were executed early in 1667 and the figure of the Britannia is a portrait of Mrs. Stuart, thereafter Duchess of Richmond, who was the fashionable beauty at Court at this time. "
The medal is even mentioned in the famous journal of State Secretary in Naval Office Samuel Pepy (1633-1703) under the entry of 25 February 1667: "[...] at my goldsmith's did observe the King's new medal, where, in little, there is Mrs. Steward's face as well as ever I saw anything in my whole life, I think: and a pretty thing it is that Britannia by. ".
