Great Britain, Indian Peace medals, 1876 Medal, EF, Queen Victoria, 1876. For Treaty No.6, by J. S. and A. B. Wyon. Silver. 76mm, 207g Obv: Bust of the Queen left wearing small crown and veil. Rev: An indian Commissioner and Indian Chief clasp hands, behind them a tented village and the sun rising, INDIAN TREATY NO 6 1876. 76mm. Original suspension clasp and ring present but not attached. Jamieson fig.38. Breton 29. Reford 122. Exquisite condition and toning. Treaty No. 6 was finally concluded on the 9th September 1876, between Great Britain and the Plain, Wood Cree, and other Indian Tribes at Fort Carlton, Fort Pitt and Battle River with Adhesions. The Indians received a Medicine chest at each outpost, $12.00 for every man, woman and child; a flag and medal for every Chief; 1 horse, harness and wagon for each Chief, or in lieu of the wagon, 2 carts with iron bushings and tires. In return they gave up their rights to some 121,000 square miles of territory to "Her Majesty the Queen and Her successors for ever".
