Magna Graecia Apulian Hydria; ca. 4th Century BC. A wonderful quality hydria, the pouring vessel renders a finely painted woman seated within a naiskos (a small shrine) holding a mirror in her left and a small swan in her right. She is wearing a sleeveless chiton (a lightweight dress) and a double stranded necklace. Her hair is pulled back in a bun. On either side of the naiskos are two attendants. The lady to the left is seated on a pile of rocks looking back into the main scene. She holds a mirror in her right hand. The lady to the right is shown leaning on a column with her legs crossed. Before her in her right hand she holds a wreath. Beneath the handle on the back of the vase is a large palmette. The bottom of the body of the vase has a wave pattern while the sides of the vase have painted foliage. The neck of the vase is painted with a laurel wreath with a center rosette. Restored from fragments. H. 13 1/4" W. 10" (33.7 cm x 25.4 cm)..
