Chinese Tang Polychrome Terracotta Camel; Tang Dynasty, 7th – 9th Centuries BC. The camel stands foursquare with its head rearing back with its two humps leaning each to the opposite side. The Bactrian camel was the crucial pack animal along the arid Chinese section of the ancient Silk Route across central Asia, and figures prominently in Tang art.
