Sicily, Syracuse. Tetradrachm; Sicily, Syracuse; c. 415-405 BC, Tetradrachm, 17.15g. Tudeer-23 (obv. die 9/rev. die 15). Signed on both obverse and reverse by Eumenes. Obv: Charioteer holding goad and reins in fast quadriga l., with rearing horses in parallel action (except for lowered head of far horse); above, Nike flying r. to crown charioteer; die engraver's signature EVMHNOV in exergue. Rx: Head of Arethusa l. wearing hook-shaped earring and necklace, hair rolled; around, S?????S??N and four dolphins; behind Arethusa's head, engraver's name EVMHN - OV.While this coin is only scarce, double signed issues of Syracuse are very rare. Even though there are some flan cracks, not a single bit of the image is missing nor is any of the legend, including the name of the city and the two signatures. This is no doubt the finest known example of this extremely desirable issue. (Cover Coin). EF
