Ancients
CENTRAL EUROPE. The Vindelici. Ca. 2nd-1st centuries BC. AV stater (18mm, 7.70 gm). NGC AU 4/5 - 4/5. Raised convex circle / Cross (or four-pointed star?) within deep concave field. Dembski 462. Scheers 1083-4. Rare. Typically ragged edges, unusually well-defined obverse punch.

The Vindelici occupied a broad region encompassing modern northeastern Switzerland, southeastern Baden, and southern Bavaria. They were subjugated by Tiberius circa 15 BC and remained within the Roman Empire, incorporated into the province of Raetia, even after the Germanic revolt of AD 9. They are regarded as a Celtic tribe, although other groups to the north and south are considered Germanic.
