IONIA. Miletus. Ca. 600-550 BC. EL 12th stater or hemihecte (7mm, 1.19 gm, 3h). NGC XF 5/5 - 5/5. Head and foreleg of lion right / Incuse square containing head of stag right. SNG Kayhan –, cf. 451 (irregular incuse). Linzalone --, cf. 1117 (same). Extremely rare! An unusually well struck example, displaying hitherto unnoted details.
Both SNG Kayhan and Linzalone depict hemihectes with a similar, though somewhat cruder obverse, and a reverse punch described as irregular or containing random lines and dots. However all published examples are either worn or indifferently struck. This extremely well-defined example shows an incuse containing what is plainly the head and neck of a stag facing right. It is probable the previously published examples have a similar reverse design, but poor centering or die wear has rendered the stag all but invisible.
