Theodosius II, Eastern Roman Emperor (AD 402-450). AR light miliarense (23mm, 4.22 gm, 12h). About Uncirculated. Constantinople, AD 408-420. D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Theodosius facing slightly right, head turned to left / GLORIA ROMANORVM, Theodosius, in military dress, nimbate, standing facing, head left, raising right hand and holding globe in left, star to left, CON in exergue. RIC X 370. MIRB 61a. RSC 20a. Rare! Minor edge split and reverse striking flaw, otherwise a lovely example, with beautiful iridescent toning.
Despite his civilian nature, the reverse of this beautiful silver miliarense depicts Theodosius II as a general in full armor, holding a globe symbolizing world rule. While stylized, the obverse portrait is carefully executed and perhaps conveys some of the emperor's mildness and reticence.
