Manuel II Palaeologus (1391-1425). AR stavraton (26mm, 8.27 gm, 6h). NGC AU 4/5 - 4/5. Constantinople, heavy (Class I) coinage, 1391-1403. Facing bust of nimbate Christ Pantocrator holding Gospels; barred IC - XC across field, lis to either side / ΜΑΝΟΥΗΑ ΔΕCΠΟΤΙC ΠΑΛЄΟΛΟΓΟC ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑΤΟΡ ΘΥ ΧΑΡΙΤΙ in two lines divided by linear circles around crowned facing bust of Manuel, nimbate and wearing loros. Sear 2548. DOC 1308. Grierson 1512. LPC p. 160, 1. Extremely rare heavy issue, one of only three to have appeared at auction since 2000, and likely the finest specimen extant.
