Republic 5 Centavos 1879 MS62 NGC, KM43. Lovett type. Obv. Liberty standing facing, head right, holding banner and resting elbow upon column to right. Rev. Eagle standing facing, head left, with coat-of-arms on breast and wings spread. Quite possibly a pattern issue, this near-choice mint state example must assuredly be the finest known, and is the sole specimen of the type certified by NGC. A near VF, with some marks and cleaning, realized a hammer of $8,500 in our 2004 Long Beach auction (sale 357, 9/2004), lot 13807. The sky is literally the limit for this exceptional Latin American rarity, which is also appealing to collectors of US, given that the engraver was George H. Lovett of Philadelphia, famous for his engraving in US numismatics. Worthy of intense interest and highly spirited bidding.
