Italy
Lombardy-Venetia. Revolutionary Provisional Government gold 40 Lire 1848-M MS63 NGC, Milan mint, KM-C24, Fr-474. Bold details, with full mint luster and light handling marks. Venice and Lombardy combined to oust the unpopular Austrians from their lands. The initial revolt succeeded, but it could not be sustained. It ended in 1849, and Italy would have to wait twelve more years to successfully establish its independence. This is a scarce coin with a mintage of just 5,875 pieces. Included is a very early (probably early 20th Century) dealer envelope showing the enormous price of 40 Lire.
