Johann II 5 Franken 1924 MS65 PCGS, KM-Y10, Dav-217. Quite scarce, especially considering that the standard references note that 11,260 of the 15,000 total minted were ultimately melted, suggesting a very low surviving population. While occasionally encountered in Mint State condition, this is a type hardly ever seen in Gem Mint State status. Indeed, for comparisons sake, we recently sold (January 2017) an NGC MS61 example for just under $400. When we last sold a high grade piece, however, an NGC MS66 realized just under $5000 in September 2012. This suggests just how heated the competition gets for exceptional specimens, and we expect no less for the current offering. Tied with two others for the finest graded at PCGS.
