Maximilian copper Off-Metal Pattern Trial Peso 1866-Mo XF Details (Tooled, Whizzed) NGC, Mexico City mint, KM-Pn104, Buttrey-45C. A desirable issue from Maximilian's ephemeral reign, made using the same dies as the circulating silver peso, but struck in copper, quite possibly in aid of adjusting the dies prior to full production. Very rare, this example faces up rather well, with reddish-brown color over both sides and smoothing in the fields that while present, blends in rather impressively. For the sake of completeness, a touch of striking weakness is visible in the centers as well, but that attribute is often commonplace on trials. Only the third example we have seen, with the last specimen, undoubtedly the finest survivor of its kind, appearing in our 2016 ANA auction where it brought $11,162.50. As such, a wonderful opportunity for the advanced collector of Maximilian or pattern issues of Mexico.
