Jose Maria Morelos gold "Statue in Caracas" Medal 1951-Mo MS62 NGC, Mexico City mint, Grove-P-324. 54mm/158.87g. Mintage: 11. Obv: 3/4 facing bust of Morelos. Rev: Arms of Venezuela left and stylized "eagle attacking snake" Mexican arms right, dividing torch at center; 5-line inscription below. A rare medal in gold, most likely presented as a gift during the ceremony where a statue of Jose Maria Morelos, idolized for his leading role during the Mexican War of Independence, was erected in the Venezuelan city of Caracas, the home of the cherished "Liberator" Simon Bolivar. As is often the case with medals of this immense size, several instances of contact are visible atop the surfaces, but the overall appearance is actually rather choice for the assigned grade. While the mintage in Grove is listed at 11, this is the only example of which we are aware, and it's almost certain that at least part of the mintage hasn't survived the melting pots.
