South Australia. British Colony - Victoria gold "Adelaide" Pound 1852 MS63 NGC, KM2, Fr-3. Type II reverse. Beautifully engraved and perhaps on the conservative side of the technical grade, this popular type was issued by the Government Assay Office in Adelaide--a town of importance based on its proximity to the gold fields. The surfaces are fully luminous, with flares of luster brightening both sides of the planchet, drawing attention to the precision-detailed designs. Minor distractions in the open areas all but fade into the flash upon rotation, and are relatively typical for the type. According to the SCWC, this denomination had an initial reported mintage of 25,000; however, a substantial amount of that original number was melted when the gold content surpassed its face value. A review of the NGC and PCGS census reports reveals that there are 60 total certified examples of this date, with only 8 pieces certified finer. As such, this Select Mint State offering commands collector attention, as well as a premium bid consideration.
