Victoria gold C/O Variety "Shield" Sovereign 1879-S MS61 PCGS, Sydney mint, KM6, S-3855, McD-126a. An extremely rare variety. This specimen exhibits full golden luster, with bold definition, and light handling marks. Upon close inspection, the "C" in Victoria does indeed appear to be struck over an "O" and a small die crack running from the border only serves to highlight the issue. We have previously only handled one example of this extremely rare variety, and this was an AU50 piece that was sold in our April 2016 Chicago auction. We have noticed that Noble Numismatics in Sydney, Australia, has also handled two pieces graded XF. NGC has certified no examples of this extreme rarity, while PCGS lists a total of 5 pieces in their Population Report. None have been certified finer than this Mint State example and we can find no evidence of another piece, as nice as this, having been sold at auction.
