Republic gold Proof 5 Francs 1889-A PR65 Cameo NGC, Paris mint, KM829, Maz-1853, Gad-1003b. According to Mazard, the small C under the value on the reverse stands for "centenaire"--in other words, this piece was struck in honor of the centenary of the French revolution. Though different catalogs have given different mintage figures for this pattern (ranging from 40 to 100 examples) it is obvious that it is an exceptionally rare issue; indeed, very few examples of this type have come up for auction over the last decade. Highly mirrored fields with delicately frosted devices give this coin superb eye appeal. A real treat for the collector of French gold!
