Prussia. Friedrich Wilhelm I gold 8 Ducat 1721 MS63 PCGS, Berlin mint, KM-, Fr-2351 (Very Rare, and this is the piece cited in the Friedberg catalog), 27.87gm. On the homage in Sczcecin (Stettin), Poland, after Friedrich Wilhelm I took over this area of Poland in 1720. Obv. Bust of Friedrich Wilhelm I right in military attire. Rev. Twelve-line inscription with the date "1721" below. Well struck, with superb golden luster. The fields are nicely reflective and the only marks are tiny and barely noticeable. Close examination reveals that the die used to strike this issue was very lightly corroded. This, and the overall appearance, would appear to show that this piece was struck at a somewhat later date than 1721. The exact date of striking is not known, but this could have been from the late 1700's to the late 1800's. PCGS has listed the date as (c. 1880), but there does not appear to be any definitive information to confirm their listing. We do know that this piece is Unique. There is only one piece known to exist. This same example was sold as an original striking in the 1904 Adolph Hess sale, and also in the Galerie des Monnaies/Spink auction of 1977. A rare opportunity to acquire a Unique historically significant large German gold coin.
