Great Britain
Kings of Wessex. Ælfred the Great (871-899) portrait 'Monogram' 1/2 Penny (c. 880) AU58 NGC, London mint, London monogram & portrait type, S-1063, North-645. ÆLFR|ED RE, diademed bust right / Londonia in monogram; cross above, triangular arrangement of pellets below. An enchanting and superbly toned example of this issue which parallels the penny denomination. As with all of the minor silver coinage of this period, encountering a specimen which remains preserved in exceptional condition is incredibly difficult, never mind the fact that this type is excessively rare to begin with. Well centered and struck, with the obverse legend being completely legible and the details of Ælfred's portrait, though crude, being completely intact. One of the nicest examples to be offered in recent memory, and one which undoubtedly will generate fierce competition and an incredible degree of enthusiasm among the most advanced collectors of early English hammered.
